Research area: Hydrodynamic characteristic of slug bubble in MBR

Pressure-driven membrane processes, including ultrafiltration, microfiltration and nanofiltration, play important roles in chemical, pharmaceutical, water and food industries. However a major barrier exists for their wider adoption, ie, concentration polarisation and membrane fouling. We have proposed using gas injection into the feed stream to generate a gas-liquid two-phase crossflow to enhance membrane separation, a method which proves to be effective, simple and of low-cost.

The research is focused on an assessment with different membrane modules, and includes a study of the interaction between the macromolecules and gas bubbles, and of applications to various industrial processes, including bio- separation. What I have done in that year is shown as following:

  1. Experiment study on hydrodynamic characteristics and mass transfer coefficient (related to wall shear stress) of air-bubbling membrane bioreactor.
  2. Predict and optimize the bubble size, bubble frequency and bubble distributor in submerged MBR aiming at lowest energy usage.
  3. Membrane fouling mechanism and control in gas-bubbling membrane separation process.

8/2000-6/2005: Key Laboratory of Terrestrial Ecological Processes, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Supervisors: Prof. Qixing Zhou. Main work:

  1. Synthesis, assessment and application of novel coagulants/flocculants to water and wastewater treatment.
  2. Modified absorbents based on natural biomaterials for industrial mineral waste remediation.
